wine bar

i've been thinking more and more lately about opening my own wine bar. it would be so much more enjoyable for me as a job than my original plan of becoming a dental hygienist. after spending a lot of time with my dad recently, who is very knowledgeable in the food/restaurant industry, i've become even more excited about the idea, and much more eager to actually get it going. hopefully someday soon!

audiological update

as you may already know, archer has microtia and atresia of the (right) ear. he's had a couple hearing tests, including ABR (auditory brain-stem response) testing, but we still were not really sure what he could, and couldn't hear.

today we saw an audiologist who finally told us something. or at least, told me something i can remember. i knew that he had mild hearing loss in his good ear, but we didn't really know what that meant. so, here's what i got from our visit:
  • archer needs a CT scan of his head to see how well his ears actually developed inside
  • he doesn't really hear low pitched tones
  • because of his lack of ear canal on the right, he cannot tell which direction sounds are coming from
  • in areas with a lot of background noise, its very difficult for him to differentiate sounds
  • if the results of his previous ABR showed response to vibration, then he could possibly be eligible for a soft band baha hearing aid to gain hearing on his right side
  • intervention services in speech and language are highly recommended
so, there you have it. i'm happy to have a little more solid information about his condition. i love my little buddy, and i want him to be happy.

on a side note, archer doesn't use any words yet (he's a little behind) but if you ask him where his belly button is he'd be more than happy to show you!

vegan pancakes

i've never really been a big pancake fan since they can tend to be a little heavy and boring, and i really dislike using eggs. (crepes, though, i love...) anyway, i decided to make some pancakes for breakfast the other morning, using a vegan recipe, and i was pleasantly surprised. here's what i cooked, adapted from this recipe:

  • 1 1/4 cups  all purpose flour
  • 2 tbs  raw sugar
  • 2 tsp  baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp  salt
  • 1 1/4 cups  water
  • 1 tbs  coconut oil*
first i whisked together all the dry ingredients, then whisked in the water, and finally whisked in the oil. the batter was very smooth and creamy looking with no lumps. then i cooked the pancakes 1 at a time in medium-sized shallow pan on medium-low heat. made 5 large pancakes.

delish.
especially topped with bananas and nutella.
(nutella is not vegan, though.)

*coconut oil is generally a solid at room temperature. at my house it stays liquid though: so hot in here! heat in the microwave for a few seconds until it becomes liquid before adding it to the batter!

i need new clothes...

i couldn't sleep last night and got sucked in to online shopping at forever21.com
here are some of the things i like:

this draped dress

this cropped top

this cropped blouse
this ruffled tank

only 12 days left on the island of o'ahu

i can't believe how fast the time has gone by. in less than two weeks i'll be living in the evergreen state again. i can't wait to bust out the hoodies, jeans, and closed-toe shoes! i had a good time here in hawaii, but i'm definitely ready to go back. visiting home every 6 months was nice, but not enough!
today i heard the tsunami warning sirens for the last time. i'm going to miss that sound. and also the chirping sound the geckos make when they're lurking around.
i met a few great people here that i'm going to miss so much. i hope that our friendship doesn't end here. send postcards!
i'm a little upset though, that i didn't really get very many pictures! so, if i can find my camera, i'm going to try and take a lot of pictures in the next week, so that i can remember my time here.
hawaii will always have a special place in my heart. archer was born here, jason and i re-started our life together and got married here, so this place is rather special to me.
mahalo for the good times, hawaii.
